Eight Calderdale Charities receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
Most people are aware of the honours people can receive in the UK (e.g. BEM, MBE, OBE, CBE etc) but the Queen’s Awards aren’t as familiar.
Annually Her Majesty the Queen recognises business excellence and volunteer excellence through the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (QAE) and the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) respectively. Prior to 2021 in West Yorkshire typically 3/4 voluntary organisations would apply for the QAVS and 2/3 would win the award. Thanks to a concerted effort and promotion of the Awards by the West Yorkshire Lieutenancy* and CFFC 44 voluntary organisations applied for the QAVS and 19 won the award, eight of these were Calderdale organisations. An incredible turnaround, I’m sure you will agree.
*The West Yorkshire Lieutenancy is led by the Lord Lieutenant (Ed Anderson – who is also the President of CFFC) who is appointed by Her Majesty the Queen and is the Queen’s representative for royal visits, civic ceremonies, presenting honours etc in the Shire. The Lord Lieutenant appoints several Deputy Lieutenants (see list of Calderdale DLs below).
The eight charities who won the QAVS this year, equivalent to an MBE, are all exceptional organisations and now proud recipients of a very heavy crystal award and a special certificate signed by Her Majesty the Queen.
