Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside!
Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees shared some lovely memories of a day trip where they took their members to Lytham St. Anne’s.
Travelling via Blackpool to pack as much in (they couldn’t go that far and not go and see The Blackpool Tower), they had a stroll along the pier before sitting and listening to the brass band playing on the historic bandstand.
One Age UK staff member commented, “It brought back lovely memories of happy holidays spent at the seaside in their childhood and the group enjoyed reminiscing and sharing nostalgic stories which brought a smile to their faces.”
A trip to the seaside isn’t complete without fish and chips and everyone tucked in heartily as the sea air had given them an appetite.
Carol Rodmell, Deputy CEO at Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees observed, “It’s great for our members to get out in the fresh air and sunshine and get the opportunity to chat with other people and make new friends. Many people are lonely and isolated and it does the world of good chatting and being with other people. Trust me, the day was full of laughter and smiles so the feel good endorphins definitely kicked in!”
“Without this funding many of the group wouldn’t have been able to get to the seaside. Experiences like this frequently help to improve people’s social wellbeing and it’s fantastic that friendships have formed which will help combat loneliness.”
One gentleman shared, “I’ve not been here since my honeymoon; it brings back so many memories of happy times with my beautiful Wife”.
He wasn’t the only person on the trip who had lost their loved one, one lady added, “Since I lost my Husband, I’ve not been able to come to the seaside, and it was a tradition we shared together. I miss him and I miss our trips. Today has been really special and brought back precious memories, thank you so much.”
