A Brew, a Bench, a Break: Ryburn Men (and Women) in Sheds.

The Men’s Sheds movement began in Australia in the 1990s: shared workshops where people do practical projects side by side and spend time with others. Sheds are often set up to reduce loneliness and social isolation, and to support wellbeing. The idea has since spread worldwide, with a large network across the UK. Ryburn Men In Sheds is one of them.

CFFC recently funded the Ryburn version of the Shed, which gives men and women a local workshop and social space in the Ryburn Valley. It was started by John Spencer just before COVID, after he came across the Men’s Sheds idea through Rotary and felt there was a gap locally.

Watch our video below to see the both the practical side, and also listen to members talking openly about why they turn up: it gets them out of the house, gives the week some shape, and takes the edge off the heavier stuff for a while.
