Netherton Wednesday Afternoon Club

Netherton Wednesday Afternoon Club recently received a £500 grant from the Kirklees Grassroots pot. The money went towards buying new equipment for the users, such as batons and balls and also a CD player.

Their leader and Chairperson Jean Greenwood said: "Our group is for over 60s and we tend to just tick over money wise, so it was great to get £500 to improve things. We bought new chairs and tables as our others are over 30 years old, hard and uncomfortable. The new seats are padded and sprung which is great for our older members with bad hips and legs."

Chickenley Playgroup

Chickenley Playgroup, who have been running for over ten years, received £3,910 from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme in September to fully furnish their setting. Their previous furniture was not their own and the company it belongs to needed it back. The money was vital for them to be able to continue their activities and to give the children the opportunity to self-select equipment.

Denby Out of School Club

Denby Out of School Club received £1955 in September from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme to allow the club to structure its next Summer Club in 2010; providing themed activities for children in this very rural area. The Club seek to increase overall participation and attendance, especially from the older children whose attendance is lower.

Linthwaite Methodist Sports Club

Linthwaite Methodist Sports Club were given £2500 from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme to fund a licensed level 4 tennis coach to go into local schools and deliver after school tennis coaching sessions. This will then be followed up by delivering tennis festivals at the tennis club. The money will fund coaching expenses, travel and equipment.

Ravensthorpe Parents and Toddlers Group

In September, Ravensthorpe Parents and Toddlers Group were awarded £1515 from the Kirkless Grassroots Grants Programme, to enable them to broaden and develop the activities they offer. Currently they offer themes of education and fun over different weekly themes.

Rawthorpe playgroup

Rawthorpe playgroup were granted £1420 from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme in September to fund playschemes in school holidays. The playgroup fund 16 playschemes at four hours per session for children aged 2-8 years old. The money will also go towards first aid training for some of their staff.

Valley Royales Majorettes

Valley Royales Majorettes were awarded £5000 in September from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants scheme to purchase new equipment for competitions and rent for the practice hall. As well as uniforms and help towards the hire of a coach for competitions. The group train at least twice a week and have attained first place in the European Champions twice in the last three years.

Xylosound

Xylosound are a music group of 16 adults most of whom have special learning needs and they were awarded £3342 in September, from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants scheme. They have recently created a book and CD about their work called 'Our Tunes' and needed the money to promote it.

They are currently rehearsing a workshop/performance that they can take to other disability groups in Kirklees and Calderdale; enabling these groups to find out more about Xylosound and give them a chance to also participate in music making
