Colne Valley Museum
Colne Valley Museum was awarded a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £3,000 towards purchasing new equipment and utensils for the school kitchen. The kitchen is heavily used by lots of schools and group who can cook their own lunch. The cash fund will also provide new storage and display materials to ensure that everything is well presented to weekend visitors. One of the most important attributes is keeping alive skills related to textile industry and home life in Victorian England so the supplies and materials are vital to the group maintaining the organisation.
Lockwood Church Allotment Association
This month the Lockwood Church Allotment Association received a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £2,290. The cash fund will enable this new group to provide mechanical aids to help new and existing plot holders improve their plots and the site in general. In the past when sites change hands they often became neglected and difficult to maintain and with the help of the grant these sites and the grounds in general will be maintained to a higher standard.
Winding On Community Dark Room
A Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £4,000 will be used to deliver the Fear Factor Photo Project which is a local photography programme that uses creative approaches to encourage individual learning and active community involvement.
The ten week project is part of a programme that is planned to be delivered over the next year across Kirklees. The fund will provide materials and equipment as well as to provide two members of experienced photographers to deliver the tailor-made photography workshops with a group of people who live in South Kirklees. Workshops will address the participants feelings about their community and what they would like to change to improve. The work produced will be exhibited at a local venue later in the year.
22nd Huddersfield Scout Group
The Scout group has been awarded a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £3,660 to help replace camping equipment which was stolen in September 2009 along with a brand new twin axle box trailer. The group has been actively fundraising to raise some of the funds but having lost almost £10,000 of resources the grant will give the group for young people a much needed boost.
Huddersfield St Patrick's Day Parade Association
Huddersfield St Patrick's Day Parade Association have been awarded a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £2,859 to assist in their plans for seven local community groups from all backgrounds to plan and prepare an exhibition that will be displayed on the day of the parade. grant will pay for a range of materials including banners, decorations, paint, wood, costumes, balloons, drawings and volunteer expenses for workshop sessions and a programme of cultural activities delivered. A booklet produced will be an eighty page amalgamation of the community's efforts in photography, artwork, short stories and various accounts of workshop experiences.
Slaithwaite Community Association (SCA)
SCA has been awarded a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £5,000 which has enabled them to refurbish washroom facilities at the centre. Health and safety improvements and renovations have created a child friendly washroom and disabled access facility. The refurbishment will benefit several groups at the centre including Slaithwaite Playgroup and Toddlers.
Paddock Cricket Club
Paddock Cricket Club was awarded a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £ 4,075 in January to hold Carpark Cricket sessions at a variety of supermarket carparks in Huddersfield and Halifax. The programme will deliver three events per month between April and September 2010. In 2009 Paddock CC ran a Carpark Cricket pilot programme which took place at Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA and Cooperative Food car parks in or near to Huddersfield. The grant will ensure the club can provide cricket training kits for children without access to appropriate cricketing attire for the programme which is designed to bring together children from a range of backgrounds.
Poperetta Ltd
This month Poperetta received a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £4,195 the money from which has enabled the group to put a musical called "Ragiella" into production. The story is based on the story of Cinderella, brought up to date to engage the young people who will participate from the areas of Huddersfield that need help at this time. Auditions for roles in the production will be held at The Lawrence Batley Theatre and young people will be trained by singing professionals to work together. A number of young people will be given extra tuition to perform the leading roles in the musical.
The music has been written to be very commercial and in addition to a live "sing through" concert in a community venue a CD will be recorded at Beaumont Street Studio in preparation for a full musical production of "Ragiella".
Soothill Ladies Social Group
Soothill Ladies were awarded a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £2,535 in January. The fund will be used to provide venue hire and qualified tutors to run sewing skills classes at the community centre and also to provide much needed storage within the centre.
Zion Baptist Church Community Centre
Zion Baptist Church has received a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £1,000 to install loft insulation for the roof space in the community church hall which will provide a warmer and more comfortable environment for all users of the premises. The additional insulation will also help reduce the carbon footprint of the church activities.
