"We have a well established, fully worked allotment site, with a group of enthusiastic, committed gardeners. Our rents cover the cost of skip hire to remove broken glass and metal and small items for general site repair, but the site had got to the stage of needing funds to update and repair the water system. Britannia Allotments Awarded a grant of £1816 in september.
The Grant was spent on two projects for the allotments. The first was for fencing and the planting of hedge row to provide site security with the added attraction of more wildlife to the area. The second was to completely replace and extend the water pipes as the old ones had corroded - this made it difficult for our members, especially the more elderly, having to carry water over other people's allotments.
One of our plot holders has had a plot for 5 years; she had tried to get a tap on her plot since she started as she had to cross two plots to get water, now she has piping and a tap installed and working.
The main improvement, besides the improved water system is the involvement of many members who had usually not been involved with work parties, now communication between members has got the whole site working together.
We hope to build on the success and involve more people from our site in projects identified by plot holders in the future."
